About Melissa:

Melissa was 27 years old when she passed due to complications from her open heart surgery (full correction), a little over 3 months after her the surgery was performed. She was loved dearly by her 2 younger sisters and younger brother. Lindsay was born with a bicuspid valve, but Jessica and Kayle were both born heart healthy. Prior to her passing, she had a boyfriend, Jay, and together they had 3 cats, Boots, Piper and Smokey. She spent her time reading, playing the piano, and doing word puzzles.

Melissa was a founding member of the HDS and served as Treasurer from June 23, 2000 to November 7, 2000. It is in her memory for which the Melissa Trothen Memorial Fund was set up.

Congenital Heart Defect(s)/Other:

Tetrology of Fallot, including:

Ventricular Septal Defect, Over-riding Aorta, Right Ventricular Hypertrophy, Pulmonary Stenosis,  Severe Infundibular Pulmonary Stenosis, Pulmonary Atresia, and Atrial Septal Defect.

Surgeries/Procedures:

14 months – Aortico-Pulmonary Anastomosis (Waterstun Shunt)

6 years – attempted corrective surgery (unsuccessful)

27 years – full correction including fixing PA, patching VSD and ASD, and repositioning the aorta
