Key Events

We host four major events per year:

Congenital Heart Defects Awareness Week (February 7-14)

CHD Awareness Week is an annual awareness effort to help educate the public about congenital heart defects. Individuals, local support groups, national and local organizations as well as congenital cardiology centers throughout the world are now getting involved!

During CHD week the Heart Defects Society begins with the raising of the HDS Flag at the City Hall in Windsor. We continue to raise awareness by holding our annual pasta dinner.

Flag Raising to be held: February , 2017

Annual Pasta Dinner will be held: February 17 2017. Door open at 5:30 pm

We also like to get the members together during CHD week for a bowling social. A gathering where families affected by CHD can get together and share stories and show support with others that understand the struggle of congenital heart defects.

Annual Bowling Social will be held: February , 2017 at 5:30.

Social Activities

Annual Picnic Social

Annually the HDS gathers together for a picnic. We enjoy a BBQ lunch while re-connecting with, and getting to know other families that are touched by congenital heart defects. It’s nice to see those affected with CHD, able to socialize with others that they can relate to. There are games and prizes for the kids. The picnic is also when we hand out the Francine Bryar Memorial Bursary.

We look forward to seeing you at this year’s annual HDS picnic! There will be games again this year, (big jenga, connect four and basketball!) There will be prizes for the kids as well as a pinata. Don’t forget about the splash pad, so remember your sunscreen, swimsuit and towel! Hot dogs, hamburgers, pop, juice and desserts provided.

Annual Picnic will be held:

Where: Mic Mac Park…New pavilion (#6), look for our HDS banner!
When: July 23, 2016
Time: 11:30 am – 2:30 pm

Fall Bowling Social

In November 2013, we held our first Fall Bowling Social. The HDS Board thought it would be a good way to get everyone to connect and have fun before the busy holiday season starts. A gathering where families affected by CHD can get together and share stories and show support with others that understand the struggle of congenital heart defects. As well as, have a fun night to distract and help forget the daily challenges that they may face on daily basis.

Fall Bowling Social will be held: Fall 2017

christine-key-events

Christine Sorrell, the daughter of Genevieve Hayes and step-daughter of Warren Hayes, was attending her 5th semester of Business Administration Program at St. Clair College. Christine was living a vibrant, happy and healthy life, like most young women her age. When sadly her life was cut too short, Christine passed from a previously undiagnosed congenital heart defect.

This is why Christine’s family, and the Heart Defects Society of Windsor of Essex County, since 2010, have tried to keep Christine’s memory alive with the Annual Christine Sorrell Memorial “Pooker” Ride. The proceeds that have been raised through out the pass few years, have gone to help the HDS grow has a charity, which then allows the HDS to help families affected by CHD’s get the financial and emotional support that many families need during trying times.

The Annual Christine Sorrell Memorial ‘Pooker’ Ride consisted of a tour through Essex County. The ride is going to be start at UNIFOR HALL and will finish at Just Your Average Joes Sports Bar.

Registration starts at 9:30am, at about 10:15am, Darren Womack started with the opening remarks, which always begin with a moment of silence, then followed by a group photo in front of the hall. The riders then mounted their motorcycles. Warren and Genevieve Hayes led the parade of bikes out of the city limits, and off to their first stop in Belle River.

The riders then continued threw each town to each stop and end at the Just Your Average Joes Sport Bar for a delicious chicken dinner. Along with door prizes, raffle prizes and a 50/50 draw. Prizes for top poker hand and top pledge earners are then awarded.
